Since we are talking about spring cleaning I think it’s very important to talk briefly about lymphatic massage. The Lymphatic System is commonly known as “the garbage disposal system” of the body. The Lymphatic System is a complex network of lymphoid organs, lymph nodes, lymph ducts, lymphatic tissues, lymph capillaries and lymph vessels that produce and transport lymph fluid from tissues to the circulatory system. The Lymphatic System is a major part of the immune system. It is through the Lymphatic System that toxic substances move out of the body through the bloodstream.
When the lymph system works well, we feel healthy and have a strong defense against illness. When it’s sluggish or blocked–say after surgery or an injury–we can have swelling, feel tired, and be more susceptible to colds and infections. Unlike the blood circulatory system, the Lymphatic System has no pump to keep fluid flowing. Some causes of a blocked lymph system are due to stress, lack of exercise, improper diet and repressed communication.

Lymphatic massage may help the lymph system do its job better. Lymph massage can benefit just about everyone. If you’re feeling tired and low on energy, or if you’ve been sick and feeling like your body is fighting to get back on track, lymph massage would likely serve you well.
After a sports injury or surgery, lymph vessels can become overwhelmed with the demand placed on them. When tissues are swollen lymphatic massage will help the body remove proteins and waste products from the affected area and reduce the swelling. This helps reduce pressure on cells and allows them to reproduce faster to heal the body.
Surgical procedures involving lymph node removal–such as breast cancer surgery–can cause limbs to swell. Severe limb swelling needs the attention of a medical team, but in milder cases, lymphatic massage alone may be enough to prevent or even treat the swelling. It’s important that your doctor be involved in your care. Let your doctor know you’d like to see a massage therapist and make sure you have medical approval.

Lymph massage can also be part of a care program for fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. Because it’s so gentle, it is well tolerated by these patients, who are often experiencing sore trigger points throughout the body. And by encouraging lymph flow and removing waste products, this gentle form of bodywork can help restore immune function and improve vitality.
Also far infrared sauna may be very beneficial for lymphatic drainage

Spring cleaning is meant not only for your home but also for your body.

To digest food properly, especially cooked food, the body first releases ptyalin in the mouth as you chew the food. Next, as the food enters the stomach, the stomach secretes hydrochloric acid and pepsin to continue breaking down the food. Then, the food travels to the small intestine, where it will spend several hours being digested. Upon entering the small intestine, the pancreas releases 3 main digestive enzymes: protease to digest protein; lipase to digest fat; and amylase to digest carbohydrates. Unfortunately, the ability of the pancreas to produce these enzymes slowly declines with age. The more cooked food we consume, the sooner the body’s capacity to make enzymes declines. In addition, the body’s ability to produce enzymes can diminish dramatically with stress, illness, and exposure to toxic chemicals.

For people who have either a history of poor digestion of protein or wish to up-regulate and clear out undigested protein particles out of their system including the blood, the following regimen is recommended.
Take 10 Premier Protease in the Morning 10 minutes before breakfast. Take another 10 Premier Protease at Noon 10 minutes before lunch. Do for 10 consecutive days. Repeat this procedure twice yearly for optimum benefits

Premier Protease, which helps breakdown of protein including protein waste products is made from the Proprietary Japanese Fermentation Process that yields fungal-free plant enzymes.

Massage Offers Excellent Return on Investment

“Invest for the long term” is great financial advice, but it’s also great healthcare advice. Never is investing for the long term more important than when you are making day-to-day decisions about your health. There are short-term gains from taking care of your health, to be sure, but the long-term benefits are not to be underestimated.

You already know the value of bodywork. For all the short-term stress and pain relief you get from massage today, there are lasting rewards you’ll thank yourself for down the road. Massage therapy as a preventive measure and part of an ongoing care regimen can mean fewer visits to the doctor, as well as fewer co-pays, prescriptions, and over-the-counter medications. Ultimately, it means a healthier and happier you.

An Excellent Value As you plan the family budget, ponder how massage therapy impacts your ability to make good decisions, cope with extra responsibilities, stay on an even keel emotionally and spiritually, and maintain harmonious relationships with coworkers, family, and friends.

Research supports the value of massage. Massage provides many benefits, including improved concentration, energy, circulation, and self-esteem, as well as reduced stress, fatigue, and pain. It’s helpful with more acute health conditions, also. If you, or a loved one, are already dealing with a health condition, massage is an even more important part of your healthcare planning.

Research shows:
– Alzheimer’s patients exhibit reduced irritability, pacing, and restlessness after neck and shoulder massage.
– Deep-tissue massage is effective in treating arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis.
– Fibromyalgia patients receiving massage have fewer sleep problems and less anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain, and stiffness.
– Massage during labor appears to help block pain, reduce stress and anxiety, and relax muscles. Some medical professionals say massage shortens labor.
– Massage can reduce sports-related soreness and improve circulation, and is beneficial in reducing symptoms associated with arthritis, asthma, burns, high blood pressure, and premenstrual syndrome.
– Oncology patients show less anxiety, depression, fatigue, nausea, and pain following massage therapy.
– Preterm babies receiving massage therapy gain more weight and have shorter hospital stays.
– Massage therapy is effective in reducing post-surgical pain and can even reduce the time required for post-operative hospital stays.

You may be trimming some extras out of your budget, as many Americans are. When weighing what goes and what stays, consider what an excellent value massage is, especially in relation to things that may be less valuable, but still cost you plenty. The price of massage has remained stable in recent years, while the cost of movies, dining out, and sports events have risen. Which of these activities has the power to improve your health and which has a better return on investment?

Get Creative There are many ways to keep massage in your life if you use your imagination. While vacations are definitely needed right now by just about everybody, more and more Americans are staying closer to home and taking “staycations.” How about planning a healthy, home-based vacation and including massage as part of your relaxation?

When it comes to gift-giving occasions, why not give and ask for massage gift certificates? Massage makes a wonderful replacement for flowers that wilt, sweaters that don’t fit, or another box of fattening candy. Some folks buy spa packages or put together their own outings with a massage, a museum excursion, or lunch at a favorite restaurant. Mothers, daughters, aunts, and grandmothers are enjoying spas together and massage is a key part of the package. These events create bonding experiences that launch new traditions and reinforce a healthy lifestyle.

Gift certificates for chair massage at airports are an option for weary travelers, as is chair massage at malls for package-laden shoppers. If you are an employer, consider gifting your staff with on-site chair massage, which has been shown to reduce stress and improve performance. Just think of it as the ultimate pat on the back for staff and one that pays you back.

Maintain Well-Being You may be tempted to trim your wellness budget when economic times are tough. Yet, a recent national consumer survey showed most massage-minded Americans are still committed to maintaining the health benefits they experience with massage. It only makes sense. The better you feel, the better job you can do of caring for yourself and your loved ones. Massage therapy will also help families under stress create healthier households, and more focused and relaxed moms and dads. Children are sensitive and often pick up on tension in a household, parents who are taking care of themselves are more likely to provide a sense of calm to their kids. This goes for caregivers of aging parents, too.

Now, more than ever, massage should play a role in reducing your stress and strengthening your health. When people feel their best, they are more able to face the challenges difficult times present. With greater health and peace of mind, you can face difficulties with poise, clarity of purpose, and strengthened emotional reserves.

Truly, massage is more than a luxury–it’s a vital part of self-care that has a positive ripple effect on you as you work, play, and care for others. Investing in your health is one investment that’s sure to pay off.

Tips to Avoid Lasting Pain

Chances are good that, at some point in your life, you will have back pain. In fact, 70-85 percent of Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lives. But even with those odds, there are still several ways to minimize your risk and give yourself the best chance to live pain-free.Several factors can cause back pain, including stress, poor posture, bad ergonomics, lack of exercise, arthritis, osteoporosis, a sedentary lifestyle, overexertion, pregnancy, kidney stones, fibromyalgia, excess weight, and more.

With all of these potential causes lurking, it’s important to look at behaviors that can help you prevent and avoid back pain before it starts. Here are a few simple healthy back tips from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke:

–Stretch and warm tissues before exercise or other strenuous activities.
–Practice good posture. Avoid slouching when sitting or standing.
–When standing, keep your weight balanced on both feet.
–Follow good ergonomics in the workplace. When sitting for long periods of time, rest your feet on a foot support. Make sure your chair and work surfaces are at the proper height. Get up and move around in between long sitting stints.
–Avoid high-heeled shoes.
–Watch your weight. Excess weight, especially around the waist, can put undue stress on lower back muscles.
–Exercise. Core strengthening moves, especially, will also benefit your back.
–Don’t lift items that are heavier than you can handle. Remember to lift with your knees, not your back. Pull in your stomach muscles, keep your head down and in line with your straight back, and do not twist when lifting.
–Get a massage. Using therapeutic bodywork can melt pain-inducing stress away from your back and the rest of your body.

And if you do get a back pain please don’t wait several days hoping it will go away, get a therapeutic massage.

Less than 50% of people that made resolutions will succeed after 6 months. This is based on his clinical studies over the past 25 years.

Some of the most popular resolutions are * loosing weight * exercising * stop smoking * saving money and so on. How can you be more successful in your resolutions?

First step to success is to understand that resolutions are not a “wish list” they are like goals, they need to be specific, measurable, rewarding, and time-limited.

Set realistic resolutions

Don’t make broad resolutions like I want to loose 20lbs

Be very clear on not only how to accomplish your resolution but also on why you want to accomplish it

Set a time frame on when would you accomplish your resolution

Tell people about your resolution. They will not only support you but also will help keep you accountable.

As you know most New Year resolutions are geared towards health. When it comes to making changes in your health/lifestyle you want to start small and gradual. One of the main issues I see with my clients is dehydration. According to naturopathic doctors the amount of water you should be drinking is half of your body weight in ounces. But again it depends on the temperature, your activity level, how much caffeinated beverages you consume a day, etc. If you are not drinking at least 50 oz of water a day then one of your resolutions should be adding one glass of water a day every few days until you reach to 50 oz then start adding some more.

Instead of making a resolution “I’m going to eat healthy” make a point of making one of your meals preferably dinner a vegetarian meal. Some of your choices could be a nice salad with mixed vegetables, some beans, 1/2 avocado or maybe a mixed greens salad with half a cup of grain such as quinoa, buckwheat, etc. Or maybe you could start your day with a green juice. You can find variety of recipes online, this is one of my favorite sites to get recipes http://www.rawfamily.com/recipes and they taste delicious.

Whatever your resolutions may be make small changes and let it be a part of your lifestyle.

There’s a difference between your doctor looking at your blood chemistry & a functional practitioner analyzing it. When it comes to your blood chemistry there are two main ranges: pathological & functional. Doctors look at pathological ranges to evaluate how well the organs are working, to diagnose a disease or a condition, or check the effectiveness of the medicines you’re taking. The functional range is used to assess risk for disease before disease develops.

The main difference between the functional & pathological range is the degree of deviation allowed within their normal range. For example, the functional range for glucose may be 85-100 mg/dL, but the pathological range may be 65-110 mg/dL. Levels above the pathological may indicate insulin resistance and future risk for developing diabetes.

When lab results fall within the patterns of a functional imbalance, strategies such as lifestyle, diet, nutrition and other non-invasive therapies may be recommended. Much of the research regarding functional ranges has been established by well-respected organizations such as the American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC), particularly the Nutrition Division.

Besides drinking as a stimulant or at social gatherings coffee has many other uses. It can be used as a facial to eliminate dry skin or as a cellulite treatment.

As a facial to eliminate dry skin:

Mix 1/4 cup used coffee grounds and one egg white, combining well. Massage gently onto face, and then allow to dry. Rinse off with warm water.

As a cellulite treatment:

Mix 1 part brown sugar and 3 parts coffee (caffeinated fresh ground or used grounds) with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 12 drops of your favorite essential oils.

Blend together to make a paste. Twice weekly, briskly rub the coffee cellulite treatment onto troubled areas in a circular motion, wait 3 minutes, then rinse off in the shower or outdoors. For an extra advantage, wrap the treated area in plastic wrap and leave on for 30 minutes before rinsing. It is a good idea to put some kind of mesh material over the shower drain to catch the mixture but if it goes down the drain that is fine too.
Keep unused portion in the refrigerator.

Coffee has amazing detoxifying properties:

If you know me as my nutrition client then you know how much I stress the importance of coffee enemas. Enemas were known in ancient Egypt, Sumeria, Babylonia, India, Greece and China. Coffee enema appeared at least as early as 1917 and was found in the prestigious Merck Manual until 1972. In the 1920s, German scientists found that a caffeine solution could open the (long tube-like structures that carry bile to and from the gallbladder) and stimulate the production of bile (fluid that is produced in the liver, aids the process of digestion of fats in the small intestine)

GMOs are genetically modified organisms, where genes are taken from one species, like bacteria or viruses, and forced into the DNA of other species, like soybeans and corn plants. Irrespective of what particular gene you insert, the very process of creating a GMO results in massive collateral damage in the plant, which can increase toxins, allergens, carcinogens, and anti-nutrients.

US is the biggest producer of GM foods: Soy (91%) Cotton (71%) Canola (88%) Corn (85%) Sugar Beets (90%) Hawaiian papaya (more than 50%) Alfalfa (at Supreme Court), Zucchini and Yellow Squash (small amount) Tobacco (Quest® brand). There are other sources of GMOs: Dairy products from cows injected with the GM hormone rbGH, food additives, enzymes, flavorings, and processing agents, including the sweetener aspartame (NutraSweet®) and rennet used to make hard cheeses, meat, eggs, and dairy products from animals that have eaten GM feed, etc. You can read about other sources here http://www.responsibletechnology.org/gmo-basics/gmos-in-food

As you can see most of packaged and processed foods contain GM ingredients. The good news is you have a choice, you can download the shopping guide, health risks, etc for free, http://www.responsibletechnology.org/resources/download-brochures
